Michael J. Worth is Professor of Nonprofit Management in the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at the George Washington University. He teaches graduate courses on governing and managing nonprofit organizations, managing fundraising and philanthropy, and related topics. He serves as director of the school’s Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management program.
Dr. Worth has decades of experience in higher education and philanthropic resource development. He served as Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs at the George Washington University and previously as Director of Development at the University of Maryland. Earlier in his career, he was Assistant to the President at Wilkes University and Director of Development at DeSales University. At GW, he planned and directed two major campaigns and provided support to the board of trustees. He held appointment as Professor of Education at GW during his service as vice president. He joined the Trachtenberg School’s faculty in 2001 as Professor of Nonprofit Management and developed the school’s first course offerings in the nonprofit management field.
In addition to articles in academic and professional journals, he has written or edited widely-read books, including: Public College and University Development (1985); Educational Fund Raising: Principles and Practice (1993); New Strategies for Educational Fund Raising (2002); Securing the Future (2005); Sounding Boards (2008); Leading the Campaign (1st edition 2010; 2nd edition, 2017); Foundations for the Future (2012); Fundraising: Principles and Practice (1st edition, 2016; 2nd edition, 2024); Advancing Higher Education: New Strategies for Fundraising, Philanthropy, and Engagement (co-edited with M. T. Lambert) (2019); and Comprehensive Fundraising Campaigns: New Strategies for Colleges and Universities (2022).
His textbook, Nonprofit Management: Principles and Practice (7th edition, 2024) is widely acknowledged as among the most commonly adopted for nonprofit management courses in the United States.
Dr. Worth holds a B.A. from Wilkes College, an M.A. in economics from the American University, and a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Maryland.
