- Jeffrey Sumberg, JD
Jeffrey Sumberg is a retired public-sector executive, consultant, and executive advisor with nearly 40 years of experience helping leaders navigate complex workforce, management, and public policy challenges. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of public policy, strategy, and executive leadership, helping organizations translate ambitious goals into practical results while balancing operational, political, legal, and workforce considerations.
Jeff has held senior leadership roles in federal government, management consulting, and executive advisory. Most recently, as an Executive Partner at Gartner, he advised chief human resources officers and other senior executives on workforce strategy, leadership effectiveness, and organizational change. Previously, he served as Chief Human Capital Officer at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, overseeing major initiatives in recruiting, leadership development, performance management, and workforce modernization. As Associate Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Jeff directed government-wide workforce programs and policies affecting more than two million federal employees and regularly advised senior leaders across the Executive Branch, Congress, and the White House. Earlier, he led consulting engagements at Deloitte Consulting and Booz Allen Hamilton focused on organizational transformation, talent strategy, and leadership development, helping large public-sector organizations strengthen leadership capacity and improve performance. He also held senior labor relations and employment law positions early in his career, giving him firsthand experience with leadership challenges from the perspectives of government, consulting, and organized labor.
Throughout his career, Jeff has interviewed, hired, promoted, coached, and mentored hundreds of professionals while leading large organizations and advising executives at every stage of their careers. He has also designed and delivered more than 100 executive workshops, leadership seminars, and professional development programs. Drawing on these experiences, Jeff enjoys helping students and alumni make thoughtful career decisions, navigate career transitions, develop as leaders, and build trusted professional relationships.
Jeff earned his J.D. from the George Washington University Law School and his bachelor's degree in psychology, magna cum laude, from the State University of New York at Oneonta. He enjoys traveling and exploring new places with his wife, Paula (GW Law '92), their three adult children and their partners, and Ellie, their energetic border collie mix. He also enjoys discovering new music and films and cheering on the New York Jets (with more optimism than actual success).
