Introducing GW's First Course on AI & Public Policy! The George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration is excited to announce PPPA 6085.13 A.I. & Public Policy, a pioneering course that dives deep into the technical, ethical, and regulatory complexities of the AI revolution. This course is led by Margaret Smith, Ph.D., a U.S. Army Cyber Officer and senior nonresident fellow at both the Atlantic Council and American University’s Washington College of Law.
Throughout this course, students will explore AI’s impact on public sectors such as healthcare, governance, and transportation. They’ll gain practical skills through hands-on projects, workshops, and insights from industry experts, preparing them to tackle policy challenges with innovative solutions.
Course Description:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Public Policy is a course focused on the debate surrounding the role of artificial intelligence in the design and delivery of public services and policy. Over the semester, students will gain an understanding of how AI technologies are developed, applied, and governed to enhance public policymaking and implementation.
Given AI's transformative potential across various sectors, including healthcare, transportation, and governance, the course will cover various topics that blend technical knowledge with ethical, legal, and social considerations. The course will emphasize interactive learning, including workshops, guest lectures from AI and public policy and management experts, and project-based assignments that allow students to apply AI tools to policy challenges. The course’s approach will give students a solid theoretical foundation, practical skills, and insights into the complexities of leveraging AI in the public sector.
