Ivy Ken is a sociologist who studies intersectionality and labor inequalities. Her recent work on labor, land, and immigration strategies in the meatpacking industry is supported by the GW Institute for Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Equity, and the National Science Foundation. Professor Ken’s scholarship is grounded in the Memphis School, whose work on intersectionality centers the structural locations of women of color. Along with Allison Suppan Helmuth, Professor Ken received the 2022 Award for Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship from the Race, Gender, and Class Section of the ASA.
Professor Ken regularly teaches contemporary theory and a graduate seminar on race, gender, and class. She is a recipient of GW’s Bender Teaching Award and the Robert W. Kenny Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
Ivy Ken holds appointments in the Department of Sociology; Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration; Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program; and an affiliation with the Global Women's Institute, and the Global Food Institute at GW.
