Sylvia Otieno

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in public service or policy, and how did your time at the Trachtenberg School shape that path?

I have had a passion for public service since I was a kid. Throughout primary and secondary school, I served in student government because I wanted to make sure my peers' needs were represented and addressed. I also looked for opportunities to serve through volunteering, both locally and internationally. That passion ultimately led me to pursue a career in public service.

The Trachtenberg School gave me the skills, confidence, and network that built my career in public service. The courses gave me the technical knowledge and analytical skills that I still use in my work today. Beyond the classroom, the Career Center played a huge role in helping me prepare for the job market by reviewing my resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. Those resources helped me land my first job at the World Bank, which I found through the Career Center's job board.

One of the most meaningful parts of my experience, though, was the community. I built friendships that have lasted well beyond graduation. They have been a source of personal support, but they're also the people I turn to when I want to talk through career decisions, brainstorm ideas, or celebrate milestones. Today, the Trachtenberg School  continues to influence how I lead, collaborate, and serve

What does being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree mean to you personally?

Being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree has given me the opportunity to pause and reflect on my journey in public service. It has reminded me how grateful I am for every experience and person that has shaped my path. More importantly, it has renewed my commitment to a career in public service. I want to live up to this recognition by ensuring that my work always centers on and serves the needs of communities.

What advice would you give Trachtenberg students and alumni who want to make a meaningful impact?

Trachtenberg is a community that is truly invested in your success, so take full advantage of it. Get to know your professors and peers, and don't be afraid to share your goals, dreams, and aspirations with them. Challenge yourself by taking advantage of the school's unique course offerings and opportunities, especially when they push you outside your comfort zone. The relationships you build and the experiences you gain will stay with you long after graduation and help you make a meaningful impact throughout your career.

What goals or aspirations are you currently working toward in the next phase of your career?

My current goal is building Neema Grace Fund, a nonprofit I founded that supports community-based organizations working in health and education in Kenya. I am focused on helping these organizations strengthen their operations, access flexible funding, and grow their impact in practical and sustainable ways.

This work brings together my long-standing commitment to public service and the experiences that have shaped how I think about supporting local organizations. In many ways, it reflects the foundation I built at the Trachtenberg School, where I deepened both the skills and perspective that continue to guide my approach today.
