Carlos Villacis

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in public service or policy, and how did your time at the Trachtenberg School shape that path?

I chose to pursue a policy degree at the Trachtenberg School after exploring opportunities in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. I realized that none of those sectors operates in isolation, and I was drawn to the opportunity to help solve complex challenges through collaboration across all three. While my career ultimately led me outside of a traditional policy role, my work still involves partnering closely with government agencies and navigating policy issues every day. The foundation I built at Trachtenberg continues to shape how I approach those challenges.

What does being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree mean to you personally?

During my time at Trachtenberg, I was constantly impressed by my peers. Their backgrounds, perspectives, and career aspirations were incredibly diverse, mission-driven, and ambitious. Simply being part of that community was something I was always proud of, so being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree is a tremendous honor.

What does leadership mean to you?

"Lead by example" has always been a guiding principle for me. Whether working with colleagues or supporting my direct reports, I try to make sure the advice I give and the expectations I set are ones I hold myself to as well. Building trust and treating people with respect are non-negotiable because the best leaders empower others rather than simply giving instructions.

What advice would you give Trachtenberg students and alumni who want to make a meaningful impact?

I would encourage students and alumni not to worry too much about finding the "perfect" way to make a difference. Whatever your passion is, there are multiple paths to creating meaningful change, and your career will likely span many organizations and roles rather than one "perfect" job. Don't shy away from opportunities that involve uncertainty or push you outside your comfort zone. Embracing change and trying something new can help you build the skills and perspective needed to make the difference you want to make.
