Kai Martin

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in public service or policy, and how did your time at the Trachtenberg School shape that path?

Public service has always been a critical part of my life. From helping senior residents navigate Microsoft Word, to organizing clothing drives for unhoused families, I have always considered myself a public servant. The Trachtenberg School has been instrumental in equipping me with the tools needed to develop evidence-based solutions for the community members that I serve. Each course that I took as an MPP student was used to strengthen my career path, and they continue to guide me through community projects that I lead. 

What does being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree mean to you personally?

Public service can be taxing to your mind and body, but when you love what you do, you continue to show up with a joyous smile and determination. Receiving this honor brought a sense of pride for the work that I do.

What accomplishment or project are you most proud of, and what impact did it have on your work and career?

Shortly after graduating from Trachtenberg, I was hired by my capstone client. During my time there, I led an inaugural small business grants program, supporting over 700 undocumented business owners with access to capital, business development, and financial literacy. This work meant a lot to me, and seeing it continue and evolve throughout the years reminded me of how important it is to strategize and develop a solid foundation for community programs.

What goals or aspirations are you currently working toward in the next phase of your career?

This next phase of my career is focused on acquiring more educational tools to help underserved communities unlock financial sustainability. I look forward to starting this journey in this Fall as I enter the economics PhD program at Howard University.
