Jason Twiss

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in public service or policy, and how did your time at the Trachtenberg School shape that path?

I was drawn to public service from an early age, volunteering often as a child and young adult. I enjoyed the varied experiences to which I was exposed and saw directly the impact that was possible. When I determined that I could turn this interest and passion into a career, I pursued the pathways to make that possible. One of these included my time at the Trachtenberg School, it helped refine that passion by giving me a deeper understanding of how my professional pursuits could create the impact I sought in other areas of my life. It helped me draw connections across sectors and opened my eyes to the numerous ways we, as professionals, can contribute to creating the world we seek.

What does being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree mean to you personally?

Being named a Trachtenberg Alumni Impact Honoree is both humbling and deeply meaningful. The recognition reflects that I have achieved some level of impact that I originally sought and motivates me to continue working toward accomplishing more and in different ways. The Trachtenberg School played an important role in shaping my professional journey, so being recognized by an institution that has had such a lasting influence is especially rewarding. It also serves as a reminder of the responsibility we share as public service professionals to continue advancing work that creates positive change and expands opportunities for others.

Who or what has most influenced your approach to public service or leadership, and why?

My approach to public service and leadership has largely been shaped by the organizations and leaders for whom I've worked, including some other Trachtenberg alumni and connections I made through GW. Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work alongside leaders who modeled effective nonprofit leadership, and I have sought to carry those lessons with me throughout every role since. Facets of this type of leadership that have shaped my approach most include putting the mission before ego, and that collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to outcomes that benefit others can advance progress faster than individual efforts alone. 

What goals or aspirations are you currently working toward in the next phase of your career?

I reflect often on how my work today may shape opportunities and outcomes for the future. Having spent my career in the association and nonprofit sectors, I have come to appreciate that meaningful impact can take many forms and emerge from a variety of sectors. As I look ahead, I am focused on identifying opportunities where I can contribute to important work, help organizations advance their missions, and continue growing as a leader. I am motivated by the possibility of expanding both the scope and scale of my impact over time, regardless of industry, and by the belief that progress is possible from a variety of angles.
